Traitor!

Who, me?

Our cat, Moose, is a night owl. So much so that he sometimes doesn’t come home at night. Which concerns us, particularly me, since there are occasional coyotes and even mountain lions that pass through the area. Besides, as a black cat he isn’t all that visible when crossing streets, and drivers aren’t always on the lookout for cats in the wee hours of the morning.

One time a couple of years ago he didn’t come home and it turned out he’d overnighted with a nice family about half a mile away. He’d followed the mom and daughter home when they were out for an evening walk and, not wanting to abandon him outdoors, they took him in. They tried calling me, but I missed it and it went to voicemail. Which I didn’t check until I was searching for him the next morning (his tag at the time did not have our home address).

He’s failed to come home several times in the last few weeks, a much higher incidence than usual. He’s always appeared out of the blue a block or so away when we go out looking for him, though.

We now know what he’s been up to: he’s been adopted by a nice nearby family, who leave food and water out for him. They even have an enclosed cat house — complete with a comfy pillow to lie on! — on their front porch. Today, as we began scouting the area he keeps popping up in, I spotted him lounging on the porch, staring at us from across the street.

The nice young man we spoke to at Moose’s second home told us he spends quite a bit of time there. At least, he’s been spending quite a bit of time there recently. Turns out the family had been acting as a second home for a different neighborhood cat, with whom Moose did not get along. But the other cat recently passed away, leaving the field wide open for His Moosiness.

He also told us one time his sister carried or led Moose back to our place. Only he promptly turned around and followed her home when she left. I guess he really likes that cat house and pillow!

I have to say I’m relieved to know he’s likely been overnighting on a neighbor’s porch. I’ll probably still get worried when he doesn’t show up at our place by bedtime, but hopefully less so.

Cats: they really do march to their own drum beat :).
