Olema and Point Reyes

To celebrate our 39th anniversary we spent Memorial Day weekend up in Olema, just south of Point Reyes Station, at the entrance to the Point Reyes National Seashore. While we didn’t get too much sunshine we hadn’t expected much, and the cooler weather made hiking more fun.

The Drake’s Bay coastline is beautiful and rugged, particularly when you get to walk along a cliff edge.

Thanx to our wonderfully wet winter there were still tons of wildflowers around. Along with some bizarrely shaped eucalyptus trees.

Not to mention a number of non-human residents, who were surprisingly reticent about people. I would’ve though all the visitors the area gets would’ve acclimated them to us.

The seashore had a different set of characters, some of whom are strictly off-limits this time of year and some of whom you couldn’t get near to if you tried. Then again, I wouldn’t chance wandering up to an elephant seal under any circumstances.

Back at the place we were staying (Olema Cottages; a great rental, highly recommended!) we shared the “backyard” with a double-headed horse.

It was a little disconcerting to see them turn their heads to look at us…when they were wearing what appeared to be opaque masks. Turns out the mask weave is open enough for them to see through, and they have to wear them this time of year because there are flys in the area that lay eggs in a horse’s eye. Ugh!

If you’re looking for a quiet, low-key getaway not too far from the Bay Area, you should definitely check out Olema and Point Reyes.
