Years ago I got to be a representative to the California State Democratic Party annual meeting in Sacramento. It was a fascinating experience.
And it contained at least one funny/weird element I’ll never forget, when Gavin Newsom stepped up onto the stage to the tune of Viva La Vida from Coldplay. Which is one of my favorite songs…but most definitely not the kind of song for an aspiring politician (at least, a Democratic one) to be identified with. As it’s about a deposed king. Bad staff work :)!
I recently learned about another example of bad political staff work which tops it, though, in spades.
"Meanwhile, conservative Christian candidate Frank LaRose kicked off his campaign announcement call to supporters with an NSFW song from the musical comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates. As the Ohio Secretary of State announced his candidacy to hundreds of Republican supporters, G&O’s bop “The Loophole” began playing in the background.
The song starts out sweetly enough, with the singers proclaiming, “All my life I’ve been good/do what my mom and dad and God say I should” and taking pride in the fact that they wear a purity ring. But the song quickly devolves into a farce..."
…and I’m not going to share the details of what comes next because, well, I have standards about what I’m willing to post. Even about GOP politicians :).
Suffice it to say Garfunkel and Oates (two young women, BTW) deliver a message good ol’ Frank most definitely doesn’t want to be associated with1.
