We decided to take a quick trip to Hearst Castle before the winter rains set in. We’d been there before, many years ago, but barely remembered the trip.
Rather than stay in San Simeon, right next to the Castle, we decided to stay in Cambria, in a motel/hotel on Moonstone Beach. I say “motel/hotel” because while the place was named Castle Inn, and it was very nicely appointed, it looks more like a (very) high end motel than a hotel or an inn. Worth checking out1 if you’re in the area.
Moonstone Beach has a very nice boardwalk running most of its length. The ocean views are fantastic!
There were also a ton of birds around, both onshore and offshore.
Including a few very impressive-looking herons.
I don’t know why, but of all the seabirds I see regularly, I find herons to be the most majestic. They just seem to radiate coolness :).
The Piedras Blancas Light Station is a few miles north of Hearst Castle. We stumbled across it on our way to check out an elephant seal “landing zone”…and because we noticed gigantic waves crashing into some very large rocks just offshore of the lighthouse!
Overall, a trip well worth remembering!
Although I found it somewhat annoying that the second morning we were there the hot water was minimal. When we were checking out the desk clerk told us they’d had a plumbing problem that day…and didn’t offer us any compensation. ↩
