Italy, Day 11: Roma Here We Come

On the way to our water bus stop we took a quick picture of this bird sculpture in the window of a woodworking shop near our hotel. We must’ve walked past this guy a dozen times while we were in Venice…and almost decided to buy it as a souvenir.

Traveling from Venice to Rome was, fortunately, uneventful. The longest train ride of our visit — 4+ hours — but we got to see a lot of beautiful Italian countryside. And we didn’t lose any lens caps :).

Getting from Roma Termini to our hotel took quite a while, as the taxi line was really long. We debated walking, but decided we were tired and concerned the wheels on our suitcases might give out on all the cobblestones1.

Our cabbie was quite garrulous. And he may have ripped us off on the fare (I was too tired to argue with him). FWIW, if your cabbie claims you can’t pay by credit card, challenge it. Every cab — other than this one — happily took credit cards. It may even be a requirement under Italian law.

After dropping our bags off in yet another nicely furnished hotel room we struck out for dinner and a quick visit to the nearby Spanish Steps.

  1. Apparently, Italians don’t believe in concrete, at least not for sidewalks. Which is funny, since their Roman ancestors used it extensively.
