I love our back deck, and the arbor above it, which makes it pleasant to sit outside on those hot summer days.
But there is one downside to the canopy: whatever the plant is — I call it “orange trumpet flower” for reasons that will be obvious once you glance at the photos — it is incredibly robust and fast growing. While it definitely isn’t kudzu, it clearly wants to be! Twice a year I have to get up on the roof to trim it back.
Apparently I forgot to do that last Fall. Or maybe our wet winter put the plant into hyperdrive. Because when I looked out the window recently this is what I saw:

We were being hit by a green tsunami!!
Even worse than the massive carpet, the plant for the first time launched an assault to get up to the second story roof!

Lord knows what would’ve happened if I hadn’t caught it in time. We might have ended up living inside Audrey II!
It took over an hour with a hedge trimmer, tree shears and clippers to trim it back to where it belongs. Which also created massive amounts of debris down below:

It took another hour and a half to clean everything up and get the debris stuffed into not one, but two, green waste containers1Too bad I didn’t have time for a well-deserved nap.
I think I need to keep a closer eye on this plant… 🙂
and I discovered something: I’m not as young as I used to be 🙁 ↩
